Socio-economic and Morpho-biometric Characteristics of the Aftout Camel (Camelus dromedarius) in the Trarza Region of Mauritania

Camels are critically important in the Mauritanian culture and traditions. The study was conducted May June 2017 fifteen localities of two departments Trarza Mauritania. objective to characterize Aftout camel population from socio-economic morpho-metric characteristics. A questionnaire administered 25 breeders area. Nine measurements were recorded on 104 camels aged 6 years or above. showed that keeping is a typical men’s activity. All investigated men, among which 68% more than 45 age, 84 % has never attended formal education. 80% have practiced rearing for 20 years. activity considered major one, as it contributes 75% family income 76% breeders. average zootechnic performances 5.28±1.64 l/d, 3.48±1.15 years, 5.04±0.84 1.38±0.58 1.6±0.40 respectively milk production, age at reproduction females, males, weaning duration lactation. studied biometric highlighted marked variability. Four morpho-zoometric indices estimated, estimated body weight 352.41±55.12 kg. Based obtained results, characterized by large diversity practices, may be an asset identifying orienting productive potential various types
